Crofter’s Organic Superfruit Spreads!

Sunday, July 19th, 2009

Crofter’s Organic has a new line of Superfruit Spreads with yummy “exotic” fruits like Maqui Berry and Yumberry.

I was so excited to try these because conventionally-grown berries have some of the highest pesticide loads. Also, these spreads are made with Fair Trade sugar and contain no artificial flavors or preservatives. It’s wonderful to have Crofter’s Organic as a healthy and delicious option in the jam/jelly/preserve/spread department.

There are four Crofter’s Superfruit Flavors and I tried and enjoyed them all.  I’m going to tell them to you in personal preferential order:

1. South American blend: Exotic blend of Maqui Berry and Passionfruit

2. Asian blend: Bright blend of Yumberry and Raspberry

3. European blend: Old world Pomegranate and Black Currant

4. North American blend: Classic Cranberry and Blueberry

The South American blend really is #1, and I’d be curious to find if there’s anyone who disagrees with me.  The passionfruit/Maqui berry combination is an incredible flavor.  The North American blend was my least favorite; there was something about it that tasted a bit “off” to me (not that it prevented me from finishing the jar!).

I enjoyed these as a toast topping and as a greek yogurt mix-in.

Re-Zenergized About Zenergize

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I wasn’t so energized about Zenergize at first, but thanks to a shipment from the company, I was able to try four additional flavors, all of which were… re-Zenergizing! (Ie, tastier than the orange flavor.)

Acai + Pomegranate Super-v, Lemon Lime Hydrate, Raspberry + Green Tea Burn, and Peach + Green Tea Burn are all pretty good.  Just be sure to let the tablet completely dissolve before you take a sip!  The Acai + Pomegranate is my favorite: the flavor has just a hint of tartness, and the purple color is lovely.

I laughed when I saw the “burn” flavors advertising weight loss.  I’m not interested in that myself, but it seems to be a recurring theme now that I am engaged.  As soon as my relationship status on Facebook changed to “engaged,” I noticed that most of the advertisements on the sidebar of Facebook are now geared toward “wedding weightloss,” “diet for the big day,” etc.  And much of the wedding planning process assumes that all women of course would want to lose weight: Bridal Bootcamp, Get Hot Before the Honeymoon.  I’m not even making these up!  I’m sure men, however fat, aren’t preyed on in this way by advertisers and vendors.  Kind of a depressing state of the union (pardon the pun).

POM Pomegranate Margaritas, Salt-Kissed

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Whip up a batch of pomegranate margaritas to greet guests during the holidays.  I guarantee everyone will have more fun, sooner!

POM makes fabulous pomegranate juice that’s pretty widely available.  To delight anyone who doesn’t care for a margarita (or is underage), serve it plain or mixed some freshly-squeezed lime juice over ice.

POM Pomegranate Margaritas for 4

Adapted from Southern Living‘s Pomegranate Margaritas

What I Changed (Reflected Here) and Why: Omitted the simple syrup because I hate cocktails that are overly sweet and because making simple syrup seemed like extra work; Maintained liquidity by shaking with ice a bit longer; Rubbed cocktail glass rims with salt.

1 1/2  cups POM pomegranate juice
3/4  cup  tequila
1/2  cup  fresh lime juice (about 6 limes)
1/4  cup  orange liqueur (such as Triple Sec)
Ice cubes

1. Combine pomegranate juice with next 3 ingredients in a pitcher. (This can be done ahead of time.)

2. Rub the rims of 4 cocktail glasses with a wedge of lime and, one at a time, tip upside down into a plate with a shallow level of salt.  Twist cocktail glass until coated, then stand upright.

3. Just before serving, pour desired amount of pomegranate juice mixture into a cocktail shaker filled with ice cubes. Cover with lid, and shake 45 seconds.

4. Remove lid, and strain into chilled cocktail glasses. Repeat procedure with remaining pomegranate mixture.

Recipe can easily be doubled or tripled.  You know, if you’re expecting a crowd.

In Season: Pomegranates

Monday, October 27th, 2008

I was the crazy girl walking down the sidewalk at lunchtime today.

After eating a delicious and nutritious salad, chock full of veggies, chickpeas and kidney beans, I was still a little bit hungry.  Not hungry in the truly physical sense, but more like: “I want something else, something satisfying, something to keep me going until dinner, something sweet, something exciting.”

Does this ever happen to you?

As I walked down the block contemplating what else I could buy, I had an amazing revelation.  This morning I had thrown a pomegranate in my purse as I was leaving because I hadn’t had time for breakfast and it was the first thing I saw in the fridge.

One organic pomegranate that had cost me a mere $1.01 at the food co-op.

So, walking down the block in the afternoon sunshine, I ripped it apart, dyed my fingers red, and savored deliciousness.  I got a lot of stares.

So yes, I was the crazy girl.
