Peeled Snacks’ American Farms Sampler

Monday, March 1st, 2010

Peeled Snacks is known for dried fruit with cute names and pretty packaging – and for its real food philosophy.

Now, Peeled Snacks is partnering with American Farmland Trust, a national organization dedicated to saving America’s farm and ranch land, promoting healthy farming practices and supporting farms and farmers.

Peeled Snacks is currently featuring an American Farms Sampler: 6 pouches of dried organic apples (Apple-2-the-core) and 6 pouches of dried cherries (Cherry-go-round) for $22.99.  Both fruits are grown in North America and 10% of sales will benefit American Farmland Trust.

Thanks to Darrah, Jennifer and Jill (team effort!) I was sent a sampler and I really enjoyed both the apples and cherries.  Both were very fresh tasting- not overly dry, hard or otherwise “over the hill” like some dried fruits can taste.

How apeeling.

Intelligent Nutrients Hair/Skin Care, Supplements

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Last spring was the launch of an exciting new line of hair care, skin care, aromatics and nutraceutical supplements: Intelligent Nutrients.

Intelligent Nutrients is 100% organic.  It was developed by the founder of Aveda (and active environmentalist), Horst Rechelbacher.  Aveda is from Minnesota, like me.  But that’s not the only reason I like it!

I had the opportunity to try a whole gamut of Intelligent Nutrient products.  As you can see, they are all beautifully (but not overly) packaged.

I’ll highlight my favorites out of all of the types:

1.  Spray-On Detangler :  I have very fine hair that is incredibly prone to tangles.  I’ve never consistently used detangler, though, since I wasn’t confident in its origins or its effectiveness.  Intelligent Nutrients Detangler was very helpful while not weighing my hair down.  Its smell is fresh and light- not toxic at all!

2. Lip Delivery Nutrition (aka Lip Balm): This lip balm is great!  I love the tall, thin shape and its sweet smell.  It really “wakes up” the lips, so to speak.  And apparently it’s nutritious for them, too- score.

3. Intellimune Tablets : These are soft, crunchy pebbles that come in a bottle.  They’re chewable and a little bit “seedy” and a little bit “fruity.”  I really got used to them and now I really look forward to eating my dose (2-4 pebbles) each day.  They’re antioxidantly potent, which helps me feel better (psychologically at minimum) on those days where coffee, take-out and wine make up the rest of my intake.  (Though coffee and wine each have a lot of antioxidants too, right?)

4. Certified Organic Hair Balm : Long live hair balm!  It’s very helpful for people with fine hair (see #1), for people whose hair likes to do “its own thing,” or for people who live in humid climates: ie, for nearly everyone.  This hair balm actually reminds me a lot of Aveda’s hair stick which is shaped like a deodorant stick and deserves serious credit for keeping me and my sister looking halfway decent during high school swim seasons.

Check out the Intelligent Nutrient website for more info on each of these products as well as many more.

Vivesana Organic, Eco Sunscreen SPF 40+

Sunday, June 7th, 2009

We all hear about the importance of wearing sunscreen, but the less common side story is that not all sunscreens are made from the same ingredients.

Vivesana organic sunscreens take that side story and make it a headline.

It created the first 100% natural sun care with the highest all-natural SPF (40 & 42) on the market.  It also uses exclusively United States-grown organics and sustainable, BPA-free packaging.  Botanicals, like jojoba and apricot, hydrate and nourish.  Potent antioxidants, like green tea and raspberry seed, help scavenge radicals and repair damaged cells.  Minerals, like zinc oxide, provide broad spectrum protection. Soothing extracts, like chamomile, help comfort skin exposed to the elements.

Sound too good to be true?  It is, almost.  Two points of caution:

1. Get ready to rub.  Such a high SPF means you’ll be sporting a whitish tint for a while after applying.

2. At $29-$32 for 2.25 oz, it’s not cheap.  However, it’s dense- a little goes a long way.

O Organics White Tortilla Chips

Saturday, April 25th, 2009

I recently brought O Organics White Tortilla Chips to a party.  They were a HIT.  Gone in minutes.

Was it the fact they are over 95% organic?

Was it because they are lightly fried to a perfect crispness?

Was it thanks to their perfect level of saltiness?

Or was it simply a good ol’ case of the munchies?

We will never know.  But does it matter?

LOFT Organic Spicy Ginger Liqueur Caipirina

Saturday, April 18th, 2009

Happy hour was especially delicious last night thanks to LOFT Organic Liqueur– specifically, the Spicy Ginger Cello (pictured furthest left).

I made the following cocktail with it and it was delicious.  Strong and not too sweet, which is how I like ‘em.  If you like your cocktails sweet, add some simple syrup.  And if you’re a lightweight, cut the recipe in half (or better yet, share).

I added ice cubes on top of the muddled limes before adding the alcohols, then stirred.

Spicy Ginger Caipirina

2 oz LOFT Ginger Cello
2 ½ oz cachaca rum
¾ of a whole lime cut into 8 pieces (about 6 pcs.)

Muddle lime before adding other ingredients.  Do not strain. Serve in rocks glass.

Kopali Organics Dried Mango & Chocolate-Covered Mulberries

Monday, March 16th, 2009

I have been a very happy snacker lately.  Kopali Organics Dried Mango (above) and Dark Chocolate-Covered Mulberries (below).  Mangos and mulberries both are fruits I love but don’t eat too often.  (Notice I said nothing about not eating chocolate often.)  The pouches are a handy size for throwing into your purse, backpack or gym bag.

myECOfarmer.com Organic Apple Delivery

Wednesday, March 11th, 2009

One day last week I was feeling kinda blah.  You know how that is.

I got back to my apartment and had a package waiting for me.  Inside that package was a bounty of organic apples shipped from independent family orchards in Washington state via myECOfarmer. My mood lifted.

The apples were of two varieties: pink lady and fuji.  Both were absolutely crisp and delicious, and tasted as though I had picked them myself moments earlier (a taste I recall from October’s apple picking adventure).

My Eco Farmer offers various memberships and giftboxes.  Seasonally, they also ship pears and cherries.

Funky Monkey Freeze-Dried Organic Fruit

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Funky Monkey Freeze-Dried Organic Fruit Mixes are my new favorite snack to keep in my desk at work.

There are four flavors and they’re all my favorite:

Bananamon: Freeze-dried organic banana and organic cinnamon

Carnaval Mix: Freeze-dried organic banana, organic pineapple, apple, papaya and raisins

Jivealime: Freeze-dried organic pineapple and organic lime juice

Purple Funk: Freeze-dried organic banana and organic acai

Each of these flavors comes in cute little pouches of 110-120 calories.  Extremely flavorful and each variety tastes distinct from the others, yet equally delicious!  I appreciate their simple, wholesome ingredients, and the fact that they use no added colors or sugars, artificial flavors, or preservatives.

I’ve found that Funkey Monkey is a nutritious snack when that late afternoon hunger (er.. boredom) kicks in.

Coupons for Organic Foods, No download required!

Saturday, March 7th, 2009

Eating Well Coupons are a great help for those of us who try to eat organic and natural foods but don’t want to break the bank.

Unlike many other online coupons, you don’t have to download any software to print them.

The selection isn’t extensive, but most coupons are $1 or more, which to me is worthwhile enough.  The products change every few weeks.  You can elect to have them email you to keep you updated.  A few of the items are obscure but many (Lundberg rice, Organic Valley milk) are mainstream yet not often on sale.
