Book Club: Clean Body

Friday, April 24th, 2009

Clean Body: The Humble Art of Zen-Cleaning Yourself by Michael Dejong is the perfect book for both the product-averse and the product-obsessed-whose-bathroom-cabinet-can-hold-no-more.

According to the book, 5 kitchen staples–in various combinations–can cleanse, moisturize, exfoliate all parts of our bodies:

1. Salt

2. White Vinegar

3. Lemon

4. Baking Soda

5. Olive Oil

I’m interested in trying some of his “recipes” for body scrubs and face masks.  I think I’ll stick with my usual shampoos, though!

I appreciate how Dejong keeps the book light and humorous– far from a militant, anti-consumerist rant, it makes me more willing to give his suggestions a whirl.

Organic Lemon Juice by Grateful Harvest

Tuesday, February 10th, 2009

Lemon Shot made with organic “lemon juice and essence” by Grateful Harvest is handy to have in the fridge when you don’t have fresh lemons on hand.  It’s amazing how many recipes call for lemon juice.

I like drinking water spritzed with lemon or lime juice.  I find I drink a lot more water this way than if it’s plain.  Add some ice and a straw and I’ll slurp it down like it’s… water?

It’s alarming how little it takes to fool my brain.

Dwarf Orange, Lemon, Lime Trees

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

A citrus tree would be a great buffer against the letdown that generally comes after the holidays.  January and February are loooong months, even in non-Leap Years.

Unfortunately they’re only recommended for planting in Zones 8-11, which are least affected by Seasonal Affect Disorder.  And are home to the tannest people.  Unfair.

Varieties available: Meyer Lemon, Clementine Mandarin, Trovita Orange, Yuzu and Mexican Lime.
