living fuel superberry ultimate powder

Living Fuel makes a line of products that have a crazy amount of nutritious things in them.

Living Fuel products contain the most potent, bioavailable, and highest quality nutritional ingredients including freeze-dried organic fruits and vegetables that are rich, natural sources of antioxidants.  The harmonious blend of these active ingredients provides diverse and balanced antioxidant protection – more so than other popular antioxidants.

I had a chance to try two of them (thanks to a nice offer from Beth) and I’m feeling all of the healthier for it.

SuperBerry Ultimate is a purplish powder that can be combined with water, juice, or milk, or mixed into a smoothie.  I tried mine two ways: with water and mixed into a smoothie with banana and blueberries.  I liked it both ways (the fruit compounds make the powder relatively sweet itself) but I would say that the smoothie was my preference.

CocoChia Snack Bars are sweet bars combined mostly of coconut, chia seeds and almond butter.  I thought it was really tasty and definitely different than most other bars.  This bar reminded me of an Almond Joy candy bar.

Check out the Living Fuel website for more information on their products including ingredient lists, nutrition facts and recipe videos.

Intelligent Nutrients Hair/Skin Care, Supplements

Friday, September 11th, 2009

Last spring was the launch of an exciting new line of hair care, skin care, aromatics and nutraceutical supplements: Intelligent Nutrients.

Intelligent Nutrients is 100% organic.  It was developed by the founder of Aveda (and active environmentalist), Horst Rechelbacher.  Aveda is from Minnesota, like me.  But that’s not the only reason I like it!

I had the opportunity to try a whole gamut of Intelligent Nutrient products.  As you can see, they are all beautifully (but not overly) packaged.

I’ll highlight my favorites out of all of the types:

1.  Spray-On Detangler :  I have very fine hair that is incredibly prone to tangles.  I’ve never consistently used detangler, though, since I wasn’t confident in its origins or its effectiveness.  Intelligent Nutrients Detangler was very helpful while not weighing my hair down.  Its smell is fresh and light- not toxic at all!

2. Lip Delivery Nutrition (aka Lip Balm): This lip balm is great!  I love the tall, thin shape and its sweet smell.  It really “wakes up” the lips, so to speak.  And apparently it’s nutritious for them, too- score.

3. Intellimune Tablets : These are soft, crunchy pebbles that come in a bottle.  They’re chewable and a little bit “seedy” and a little bit “fruity.”  I really got used to them and now I really look forward to eating my dose (2-4 pebbles) each day.  They’re antioxidantly potent, which helps me feel better (psychologically at minimum) on those days where coffee, take-out and wine make up the rest of my intake.  (Though coffee and wine each have a lot of antioxidants too, right?)

4. Certified Organic Hair Balm : Long live hair balm!  It’s very helpful for people with fine hair (see #1), for people whose hair likes to do “its own thing,” or for people who live in humid climates: ie, for nearly everyone.  This hair balm actually reminds me a lot of Aveda’s hair stick which is shaped like a deodorant stick and deserves serious credit for keeping me and my sister looking halfway decent during high school swim seasons.

Check out the Intelligent Nutrient website for more info on each of these products as well as many more.

Recipe: Mufcake = muffin plus cupcake

Friday, November 7th, 2008

The dividing line between muffin and cupcake has always been a bit hazy.

I think people prefer to say “muffin” when they’re eating it before noon and when they’re trying to be healthy.

Once, at Perkins Restaurant in Minnesota, the “muffin of the day” was double chocolate chip with cappuccino frosting. The worst part? I ordered it.

To be fair, my mufcakes are nutritious: whole wheat, 5 bananas and cocoa powder (full of antioxidants).

Chocolate Banana Whole Wheat Mufcakes

Adapted from Pinch My Salt, a San Diego-based food blog

1/2 C. (1 stick) butter
1 C. sugar (per usual, I used raw/unrefined)
2 eggs
1.5 C. mashed ripe banana (~5 bananas)
1 t. vanilla
1/4 C. half and half
2 C. whole wheat pastry flour
1 t. baking soda
1/2 t. salt
1/2 C cocoa powder

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
2. In a large bowl, mix butter, sugar, eggs, bananas and vanilla.
4. In a separate bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, salt and cocoa powder.
5. Stir the liquid ingredients into the dry ingredients.
6. Pour this mixture into muffin tins that have been greased or lined with paper cups. (I made 6 large mufcakes and 12 mini mufcakes.)
7. Bake for 45-60 minutes, depending on size of muffins- use a toothpick to test. Cool at least 10 minutes.

To emphasize muffin-ness, spread with peanut butter and banana slices.

To emphasize cupcake-ness, top with chunky coconut frosting.
