Muir Glen Organic Chipotle Salsa

Saturday, February 28th, 2009

Muir Glen Organic Chipotle Salsa is delicious.  Of course, I’ve hardly ever met a salsa I didn’t like.  It’s got a nice bite without being super spicy.  It’s a bit smokey and the tiniest bit sweet.  Yum.

Ingredients: Organic Diced Tomatoes in Juice, Organic Tomato Puree (Organic Tomato Paste, Water), Organic Onions, Organic Green Bell Pepper, Organic Apple Cider Vinegar, Organic Garlic, Sea Salt, Organic Cilantro, Organic Vinegar, Organic Chipotle Pepper Powder, Naturally Derived Citric Acid, Natural Smoke Flavor (Contains Organic Malted Barley Flour), Naturally Derived Calcium Chloride.

Linzie Hunter Illustration

Friday, February 27th, 2009

Shower by Linzie Hunter, a fabulous London-based illustrator.

I’ve been pretty deliberate, despite my upcoming nuptials, not to make Smorgasbite a wedding blog (you’re welcome), but when food and weddings intersect, well, isn’t that just a happy coincidence?

The bride and groom of this illustration look quite handsome (and well-bronzed), the bows on the packages are lovely, and those hallow ice cubes remind me of how my Grandma’s freezer used to automatically make them, which I’d suck on as my lemonade got watery after we went swimming in the condo’s pool.

Leather Paper Bag

Thursday, February 26th, 2009

goodforall’s MyPaperBag is 100% leather.  (At least I think that’s what 100% leer translates to.)

How much fun would this be to tote around town?  Grocery shopping just got sexier.

Cool Chrome Kitchen Timer

Tuesday, February 24th, 2009

How cool is this chrome kitchen timer?

You pull up the “measuring tape” and, as the minutes tick by, the tape gets shorter.

My question is: does it ring like a cowbell?

Re-Zenergized About Zenergize

Monday, February 23rd, 2009

I wasn’t so energized about Zenergize at first, but thanks to a shipment from the company, I was able to try four additional flavors, all of which were… re-Zenergizing! (Ie, tastier than the orange flavor.)

Acai + Pomegranate Super-v, Lemon Lime Hydrate, Raspberry + Green Tea Burn, and Peach + Green Tea Burn are all pretty good.  Just be sure to let the tablet completely dissolve before you take a sip!  The Acai + Pomegranate is my favorite: the flavor has just a hint of tartness, and the purple color is lovely.

I laughed when I saw the “burn” flavors advertising weight loss.  I’m not interested in that myself, but it seems to be a recurring theme now that I am engaged.  As soon as my relationship status on Facebook changed to “engaged,” I noticed that most of the advertisements on the sidebar of Facebook are now geared toward “wedding weightloss,” “diet for the big day,” etc.  And much of the wedding planning process assumes that all women of course would want to lose weight: Bridal Bootcamp, Get Hot Before the Honeymoon.  I’m not even making these up!  I’m sure men, however fat, aren’t preyed on in this way by advertisers and vendors.  Kind of a depressing state of the union (pardon the pun).

Easy Paper Rosette Decoration

Friday, February 20th, 2009

Paper Source usually annoys me with their emails (a listserv which I apparently added myself to unknowingly after an online purchase) but this latest one actually caught my eye before I banished it to the Spam folder.

These Paper Rosette Decorations are actually really cute.  I’m always looking for a nice, simple decoration that I can pull together the day of a party with materials I already have.

I almost gave up when I noticed the instructions were in PDF, but I rallied on for our collective benefit.  Here’s the PDF:

Now that I see it like that, it’s pretty intuitive.

Maybe I’ll stay on that Paper Source email list after all.

Three Meals with Variations by Budget and Time

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

Whole Foods’ Chowdown Chart has an interesting comparison of 3 meals, each prepared with 3 variations according to budget and time.

It makes me realize how few pre-packaged foods I buy.  I am definitely willing to invest more time for less cost.  I never buy shredded cheese or rotisserie chickens, not because there aren’t high quality versions available, but because they are more expensive than shredding cheese or roasting a chicken myself.  Plus, I enjoy putzing away in the kitchen.

Beans?  Beans I go back and forth on.  I appreciate the dry version being cheaper (and lighter to schlep back from the store) but it really does take time and forethought to soak and boil them.  And honestly, in recipes, I don’t notice much of a taste difference.  Neither does the The Amateur Gourmet.  Beans are one item that I’m tempted to see my time as more valuable than money.  That is, until I get my hands on some really great heirloom beans like Rancho Gordo.

Donuts and Bacon 08: Taste We Can Believe In

Wednesday, February 18th, 2009

Just saw this Donuts and Bacon 08: Taste We Can Believe In Obama-inspired t-shirt via Pip’s Bad Ideas (which featured my cookies as #81).

Perhaps there could be a 2009 rendition featuring broccoli and strips of fruit leather, maybe?… to better reflect the political change we hope to see with the Farm Bill.

Picnic Backpack with Cooler

Tuesday, February 17th, 2009

This Picnic by Ascot Hampton Ultimate Picnic Backpack Cooler is now hanging in our closet, thanks to some dear North Carolina friends.  Add some wine, cheese, fruit, a frisbee and a park and there you have an afternoon.

Add this to my growing list of Reasons to Anticipate Spring.
